Who uses the Name Generator by Culture
Families keeping a cultural link
Parents often want a name that connects a child to their heritage and is still easy to use where the family lives now. Seeing the meaning beside each name makes a short list easy to react to, and the heart button keeps your favourites together to share with relatives.
Writers creating believable characters
A cast feels more real when its names reflect where people come from. Full names here stay within one culture and follow its usual order, which gives you a sensible starting point before you read about the community you are writing about.
Testing international forms
Sign-up forms often fail on names from outside the US and Europe. Names such as Rodríguez, Chukwuemeka or Kim Ji-woo are a useful check that your forms and layouts handle accents, longer names, hyphens and a family name written first.
Teachers and students
Names are a friendly way into a lesson on world cultures. Students can compare how different places build names, including Yoruba names that form short sentences and Swahili names that mark the day a child was born.
How naming differs between cultures
- Hispanic: many people use two family names, one from each parent. We show one to keep results simple.
- Yoruba and Igbo: these Nigerian names are often short sentences or wishes, and many give thanks or mention God.
- Swahili: used across East Africa, with many names drawn from Arabic or from the day a child was born.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean: the family name traditionally comes first, so full names here appear in that order.

Before you decide on a name
- Ask someone who speaks the language how the name sounds and what it suggests today.
- For Chinese, Japanese and Korean names, choose the written characters as well, because they set the meaning.
- If you are naming a character, read about the community the character comes from.
Name Generator by Culture questions
How accurate are these lists?
They are a hand-picked starting point, not a census of each culture, so they carry no popularity ranks. Families and regions can explain the same name differently. A speaker of the language is the best person to check a name you like.
Why do Chinese, Japanese and Korean names have several possible meanings?
In these languages the written characters set the meaning, and one sound can match many characters. We show one common reading. The name you choose may mean something different depending on the characters used.
Why is the family name first in East Asian results?
That is the traditional order in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, so Kim Ji-woo has the family name Kim. Many people reverse the order when living or working in English-speaking countries.
Why is Africa split into only three groups?
Africa has thousands of languages and naming traditions, and no single list could represent them. We started with Yoruba, Igbo and Swahili names, so this is a small sample and not a picture of the whole continent.
Does a name show where someone is from?
No. Names travel with families, and people everywhere have names from other cultures. Treat these results as naming ideas and never as a way to judge a person's background, nationality or beliefs.
Can I use a name from a culture that is not my own?
The generator is open to everyone. If you are not part of a culture, it is worth finding out what a name means to the people who use it, especially for a child or a prominent character.
